She practiced small animal veterinary medicine on Vancouver Island, British Columbia before pursuing her graduate studies through the Universities of Calgary and Guelph. Naima is currently completing her PhD thesis on multi-disciplinary health surveillance of Northern Mountain caribou through the Ontario Veterinary College, Department of Pathobiology. In September 2020, Naima started her position as the Territorial Wildlife Veterinarian with the Government of the Northwest Territories – Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and as Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for the Northwest Territories. In this role, Naima is the senior authority on wildlife health research, monitoring, and management for the Northwest Territories, and offers support to the overall population health, management, conservation, and human and traditional economic-use of wildlife in the territory. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1994 and then from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. After starting his professional career in mixed animal practice, he transitioned to the federal government with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency serving in several roles including a brief secondment to Agriculture and Agri-food Canada’s Market Access Secretariat. In 2014, Dr. Lehman moved from the federal government to Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and after two years, was appointed as Alberta’s Chief Provincial Veterinarian. Dr. Lehman served as chair of the Council of Chief Veterinary Officers for two years (2017 and 2018). She completed her PhD in 2016. Since 2012, Jane held the position of program veterinarian with the Government of Yukon’s Animal Health Unit in the Department of Environment. She became the Chief Veterinary Officer and director of the Animal Health Unit with the Government of Yukon in early 2025. Dr. Harms has worked with government, academic, and other partners to better understand the role and impact of diseases on wildlife in northern Canada. Her contribution to understanding wildlife health and disease in northern Canada includes work on avian diseases including avian cholera and avian influenza, rabies, Trichinella, winter ticks and other parasites of wildlife, respiratory Mycoplasmas, wood bison health and wildlife capture. Elle est titulaire d'un doctorat en écologie des maladies de la faune sauvage. Elle a obtenu son diplôme du Western Collège of Veterinary Médicine (WCVM) en 2007, puis une maîtrise en sciences vétérinaires et une résidence senior en anatomopathologie et santé de la faune sauvage, également au WCVM. Elle a réussi l'examen du Conseil de l'American Collège of Veterinary Pathologiste en 2010. Elle a obtenu son doctorat en 2016. Depuis 2012, Jane occupe le poste de vétérinaire de programme au sein de l'unité de santé animale du ministère de l'Environnement du gouvernement du Yukon. Elle est devenue vétérinaire en chef et directrice de l'unité de santé animale du gouvernement du Yukon au début de l'année 2025. La Dre Harms a travaillé avec le gouvernement, le milieu universitaire et d'autres partenaires afin de mieux comprendre le rôle et l'impact des maladies sur la faune sauvage dans le nord du Canada. Sa contribution à la compréhension de la santé et des maladies de la faune sauvage dans le nord du Canada comprend des travaux sur les maladies aviaires, notamment le choléra aviaire et la grippe aviaire, la rage, Trichinella, les tiques d'hiver et autres parasites de la faune sauvage, les mycoplasmes respiratoires, la santé des bisons des bois et la capture d'animaux sauvages. She is also the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for Canada and the WOAH Delegate for Canada. Dr. Ireland graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, with a degree in Veterinary Medicine and a post-graduate degrees in Veterinary Immunology and Business Administration. She began her career in a mixed animal practice in eastern Ontario. In 2002, Dr. Ireland joined the Veterinary Drugs Directorate at Health Canada and held various positions, including Director General. In 2020, Dr. Ireland joined the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as the Executive Director of the Animal Health Directorate. As the Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Ireland leads Canada's efforts to effectively manage current and emerging disease threats in order to protect animal health and human health, and to maintain international trust in Canada's inspection and certification systems in support of market access. As the WOAH Delegate, Dr. Ireland represents Canada on the international stage, and plays an integral role in Canada's participation in the WOAH standard- setting process for the development and adoption of animal health standards and guidelines. In this role Dr. Ireland works to ensure that the standards are appropriately and consistently implemented in Canada. Dr. Gerald Wayne Ollis Former CVO for Alberta Gerald Wayne Ollis, a graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in 1971, also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma from WCVM. Following his graduation, he spent three years in mixed veterinary practice in Leduc, Alberta, before moving on to Alberta Livestock Transplants, where he contributed to the development of non-surgical embryo collection techniques from cows. In 1997, Dr. Ollis returned to Leduc to practice large animal medicine, herd health, and surgery until 1985, when he joined Alberta Agriculture. His early work involved disease investigations and extension services, eventually leading to his management of the Microbiology labs. Dr. Ollis advanced through various management roles and concluded his career as Alberta’s Chief Provincial Veterinarian (CPV), serving in the position for nine years. During his later years as CPV, Dr. Ollis played a pivotal role in Alberta's response to the detection of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in a slaughter cow at a provincially licensed abattoir. He led the development of Alberta’s BSE surveillance program, which included testing on-farm deaths of adult cattle and involved local veterinary practitioners. This program, unique in Canada, significantly increased BSE surveillance numbers nationwide. In the later years of his career, Dr. Ollis led the development of Alberta’s new Animal Health Act, a comprehensive update to the province’s animal legislation. He retired in 2009 and has enjoyed good health since. Dr. Ollis remains married to Sharon and has two adult children and five grandchildren. Dr. Hauer was one of the original board members of the National Farmed Animal Health and Welfare Council, an organization that later evolved into Animal Health Canada. His early work on the council laid the foundation for many of the animal health programs now in place across the country. Though promoting cooperation between animal and human health professionals during his time as CVO proved challenging, Dr. Hauer remains committed to the belief that strong relationships between these fields are essential for the well-being of both animals and people. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ontario Veterinary College, and a Master of Veterinary Science in Anatomical Pathology from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Pritchard served as Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of British Columbia for eight years, where she was key in the development and national acceptance of the Standard for Slaughter without Stunning. Her time as CVO also included promoting collaborative relationships among CVOs, notably during the 2014 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak in British Columbia. She emphasized the importance of strategic planning and open communication among CVOs to address national animal health issues effectively. Her career with the BC Public Service spanned 17 years, during which she held several key positions including Executive Director of the Plant and Animal Health Branch, Director of the Animal Health Centre, and Chief Veterinarian for the province. She also managed the Regulatory Unit overseeing dairy farms, bees, fur farms, and game farms, as well as the Plant Health Unit and served as a Public Health Veterinarian. Following her retirement from the BC Public Service in 2021, Dr. Pritchard served as interim registrar for the College of Veterinarians of BC (CVBC) for 18 months. She was later elected to the CVBC Council and currently serves as its President. Originally from British Columbia, Dr. Pritchard has lived and worked across Canada, Europe, China, and briefly farmed mixed cattle and grain in Alberta. Her career began in the swine industry and spanned the primary chain from farm to fork: stockperson, herd veterinarian, and meat inspector, which sparked her interest in regulatory medicine. After earning her MSc in swine medicine in 2015, Rayna worked for the CFIA and the Government of Alberta in various roles including foreign animal disease veterinarian, district veterinarian, and surveillance veterinarian before being appointed chief veterinarian for BC in 2020. During her tenure, Rayna led the province’s animal health response to both the first case of SARS-CoV-2 in farmed mink in Canada and, 11 months later, the catastrophic flooding in the Fraser Valley atmospheric river event, which impacted the most livestock dense area in BC. Currently, he coordinates the Squeal on Pigs Manitoba project, which aims to eliminate invasive wild pigs from the province, supported by the Manitoba Pork Council and government funding. Dr. Lees earned his DVM from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and an MSc in Veterinary Epidemiology from the University of Guelph. He served as Manitoba's first Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) from 2005 to 2014, overseeing animal health, welfare, and food safety programs. He implemented the One Health approach, integrating provincial departments to manage health emergencies like the 2010 avian influenza outbreak and the 2011 flood. As the national surveillance lead for the Canadian Animal Health Surveillance Network, Dr. Lees helped establish an early warning system for animal diseases. In 2008, he chaired the Council of Chief Veterinary Officers of Canada, developing a national strategic plan for farmed animal health, later leading to the formation of Animal Health Canada. In retirement, Dr. Lees continues to address public health challenges, including food safety policy, antimicrobial resistance, and invasive species control. She served as Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of Manitoba from August 2014 to August 2018, where she led a team specializing in animal health and welfare, food safety, and laboratory diagnostics. During her time as CVO, she worked closely with provincial industry groups, veterinary professionals, and other partners, fostering a collaborative approach to managing animal disease, welfare, and food safety. One of Dr. Bergman’s key achievements as CVO was navigating the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea outbreak, which significantly impacted Manitoba's swine industry, the largest livestock sector in the province. She believes that the role of CVO is crucial to animal health and welfare in Canada and emphasizes the importance of empowering CVOs to lead and innovate in their work. She obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2002 and completed a PhD in Epidemiology at the Ontario Veterinary College in 2014. Dr. Leonard served as Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for Nova Scotia for 12 months. During her time as CVO, Dr. Leonard made significant contributions by re-establishing the CVO position in Nova Scotia after many years without one. Her most impactful achievement was forging strong connections with the Nova Scotia Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) and other Atlantic CVOs through regular meetings and collaborative efforts. These interactions facilitated the sharing of common challenges, issues, and solutions across the four Atlantic provinces. One of her key accomplishments was raising awareness among senior management about the challenges of managing both the provincial Animal Health Lab and the CVO role. Her efforts led to the decision to split the CVO position into two distinct roles, thereby addressing the dual responsibilities more effectively. Dr. Leonard also focused on strengthening ties with public health officials, Atlantic CVOs, and other provincial government departments, bringing the One Health concept to life in Nova Scotia and across Atlantic Canada. Despite finding that the role of CVO was not as she had initially envisioned, Dr. Leonard considers it an incredible experience. Dr. Sanford served as the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for Prince Edward Island from May 2016 to November 2020, becoming the first officially appointed CVO for the province. One of her greatest achievements was establishing the Office of the CVO for PEI, building on the successes of other Canadian jurisdictions. She assembled a dedicated team to advance the province's animal health agenda. Dr. Sanford is particularly looking forward to the modernization of the PEI Animal Health Act and the introduction of regulations for Notifiable Diseases, which she believes will provide the CVO with the essential tools needed to support the agricultural industry effectively. Dr. Major served as Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for Quebec from 2010, when the position was established, until 2015. His time as CVO was marked by notable achievements, including the implementation of a coordinated plan to combat antimicrobial resistance in Quebec. This initiative brought together governments, universities, laboratories, colleges, professional associations, and producer groups. He also negotiated a formal agreement with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for animal health emergency measures specific to Quebec and played a pivotal role in advancing the One Health concept through the "Stratégie québécoise de santé et de bien-être des animaux: Pour Une santé bien pensée!" Dr. Major’s work was instrumental in fostering a collaborative approach to animal health and welfare in the province. A memorable moment in Dr. Major's career involves his admiration for Brian Evans' presentations. He recalls the early 2000s annual animal health conference in Ottawa, where Evans, known for his eloquence and precision, faced an unexpected challenge. During a presentation on the latest OIE annual meeting results, Evans’ slides were inadvertently mixed with tourist photos from Paris, leading to a humorous and unplanned pause in his speech. She continues to work as a part-time veterinary consultant. Dr. Althouse earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in 1982. Her career includes diverse experience in Saskatchewan, including mixed rural practice with a focus on swine and dairy herd health, working as a pig farmer, and serving on provincial agriculture research boards. She also worked as a CFIA poultry slaughter veterinarian and disease control specialist for domestic diseases. This background provided her with a broad education in veterinary practice. As CVO, Dr. Althouse's major accomplishment was developing a framework for future animal health initiatives both within Saskatchewan and nationally. Her team focused on modernizing the provincial regulatory framework to prevent and respond to diseases, improve animal welfare, and expand animal health surveillance programs. They established regulated disease lists and response programs in consultation with industry and created working groups related to One Health, One Welfare, and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Regionally, Dr. Althouse chaired the ASF (African Swine Fever) destruction and disposal group and played a key role in the formation of the Western Canadian Animal Health Network (WeCAHN). Nationally, she contributed to rabies response guidelines, CWD response strategies, the formation of the Canadian Animal Health Surveillance System (CAHSS), and committee work on the formation of the Animal Health Council (AHC). He serves as the Treasurer and an ex-officio member of both the Executive Committee and the Council of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). Additionally, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the McEachran Institute, Canada’s first think tank dedicated to integrating the health of communities, animals, and nature. Dr. Evans earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a focus on Genetics and Nutrition from the University of Guelph in 1974 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the same institution in 1978. He was honored with degrees of Laws and Letters from the University of Guelph in 2013 and the University of Calgary in 2014. He served as Canada’s Chief Veterinary Officer for 15 years, from 1998 to 2013, making him the second-longest-serving individual in that role. Among his significant contributions were mentoring future leaders, establishing a veterinary student internship program, deploying veterinarians internationally in response to disease outbreaks, and enhancing collaboration between the Council of Chief Veterinary Officers and the Council of Chief Medical Officers of Health. His work increased international recognition of Canada’s veterinary services and animal health programs. Dr. Evans is committed to addressing misinformation and enhancing public confidence in science. He hopes that current CVOs will effectively engage public health and eco-health professionals to advance One Health initiatives, addressing threats at the intersection of animal health, public health, and ecosystem health. In June 2024, Dr. Evans was honored with appointment to the Order of Canada. La Dre Pritchard a été vétérinaire en chef de la Colombie-Britannique pendant huit ans. Elle a joué un rôle clé dans l’élaboration et l’acceptation au niveau national de la norme relative à l’abattage sans étourdissement. En tant que VEC, elle a également encouragé les relations de collaboration entre les VEC, notamment dans le cadre de l’épidémie d’influenza aviaire hautement pathogène qui a frappé la Colombie-Britannique en 2014. Elle a souligné l’importance de la planification stratégique et d’une communication ouverte entre les VEC pour traiter efficacement les questions nationales de santé animale. Sa carrière au sein de la fonction publique de la Colombie-Britannique s’est étendue sur 17 ans, au cours desquels elle a occupé plusieurs postes clés, notamment ceux de directrice exécutive de la direction générale de la santé des végétaux et des animaux, de directrice du centre de santé animale et de vétérinaire en chef de la province. Sa carrière a débuté dans l’industrie porcine et s’est étendue à toute la chaîne primaire, de la ferme à l’assiette : préposée aux stocks, vétérinaire de troupeau et inspectrice des viandes, ce qui a éveillé son intérêt pour la médecine réglementaire. Après avoir obtenu sa maîtrise ès sciences en médecine porcine en 2015, Rayna a travaillé pour l’ACIA et le gouvernement de l’Alberta à divers rôles, notamment en tant que vétérinaire pour les maladies animales exotiques, vétérinaire de district et vétérinaire de surveillance, avant d’être nommée vétérinaire en chef de la Colombie-Britannique en 2020. Au cours de son mandat, Rayna a dirigé la réponse de la province en matière de santé animale face au premier cas de SRAS-CoV-2 chez des visons d’élevage au Canada et, 11 mois plus tard, aux inondations catastrophiques de la rivière atmosphérique de la vallée du Fraser, qui ont touché la zone la plus dense en bétail de la Colombie-Britannique. Elle a obtenu son doctorat en médecine vétérinaire au Collège vétérinaire de l’Atlantique en 2002 et a obtenu un doctorat en épidémiologie au Collège de médecine vétérinaire de l’Ontario en 2014. La Dre Leonard a occupé le poste de vétérinaire en chef de la Nouvelle-Écosse pendant 12 mois. Pendant son mandat, la Dre Leonard a apporté une contribution importante en rétablissant le poste de VEC en Nouvelle-Écosse après de nombreuses années d’absence. Sa réalisation la plus marquante a été l’établissement de liens solides avec le médecin hygiéniste en chef provincial de la Nouvelle-Écosse et d’autres VEC de l’Atlantique, grâce à des réunions régulières et à des efforts de collaboration. Ces interactions ont facilité les échanges sur les défis, les problèmes et les solutions communs aux quatre provinces atlantiques. L’une de ses principales réalisations a été de sensibiliser les cadres supérieurs aux défis posés par la gestion du laboratoire provincial de santé animale et par le rôle de VEC. Ses efforts ont abouti à la décision de scinder le poste de VEC en deux rôles distincts, ce qui a permis d’assumer plus efficacement cette double responsabilité. La Dre Leonard s’est également attachée à renforcer les liens avec les responsables de la santé publique, les VEC des provinces de l’Atlantique et d’autres ministères provinciaux, afin de concrétiser le concept « Une seule santé » en Nouvelle-Écosse et dans l’ensemble du Canada atlantique. Bien qu’elle ait constaté que le rôle de VEC n’était pas celui qu’elle avait envisagé au départ, la Dre Leonard considère qu’il s’agit d’une expérience incroyable. Elle se déclare elle-même passionnée par la santé publique et les zoonoses et se réjouit des réalisations importantes du Conseil des Médecins Vétérinaires en chef au cours des deux dernières décennies. Au cours de son mandat, elle a joué un rôle essentiel dans l’élaboration de la première Loi sur la santé des animaux de l’Ontario, qui a été adoptée en 2009. Cette réalisation est le fruit d’une collaboration entre le personnel du ministère et les secteurs de l’élevage et de la volaille de l’Ontario. Lorsqu’elle réfléchit à sa carrière, la Dre Stark espère que le public renouvellera sa confiance dans la science et les responsables de la santé publique. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme, Cathy a exercé dans le domaine des petits animaux et des équidés avant de retourner au Collège de médecine vétérinaire de l’Ontario pour obtenir une maîtrise en études cliniques et une résidence en médecine interne des grands animaux. Cathy est certifiée par l’American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine en médecine interne pour les grands animaux. En 2013, Cathy s’est jointe à la Direction de la santé et du bien-être des animaux du ministère de l’Agriculture, de l’Alimentation et des Affaires rurales de l’Ontario (MAAARO). Elle a continué à développer ses connaissances et son expérience en matière de gestion des urgences en tant que vétérinaire principal pour la planification et la préparation. À ce titre, Cathy était responsable de la planification et de la préparation aux maladies au niveau provincial, de l’intervention en cas de flambée épidémique et de l’aide apportée à diverses organisations de produits et de parties prenantes afin d’améliorer leur préparation aux situations d’urgence. En juillet 2019, Cathy a été nommée vétérinaire en chef de l’Ontario. Elle a obtenu son doctorat en médecine vétérinaire au Collège vétérinaire de l’Atlantique en 2000 et a terminé son doctorat en épidémiologie au Collège vétérinaire de l’Atlantique en 2006. La Dre Sanford a occupé le poste de vétérinaire en chef de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard de mai 2016 à novembre 2020, devenant ainsi la première VEC officiellement nommée pour la province. L’une de ses plus grandes réalisations a été la création du Bureau du VEC pour l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, en s’appuyant sur les réussites d’autres juridictions canadiennes. Elle a constitué une équipe dévouée pour faire avancer le programme de santé animale de la province. La Dre Sanford attend avec impatience la modernisation de la Animal Health Act de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard et l’introduction d’une réglementation sur les maladies à déclaration obligatoire, qui, selon elle, fourniront au VEC les outils essentiels nécessaires pour soutenir efficacement l’industrie agricole. Il a obtenu son doctorat en médecine vétérinaire à l’Université de Montréal en 1983 et a ensuite suivi un programme de formation en diagnostic spécialisé en médecine de laboratoire (IPSAV) en 1989. Le Dr Major a occupé le poste de vétérinaire en chef du Québec de 2010, date de création du poste, à 2015. Son mandat a été marqué par des réalisations notables, notamment la mise en œuvre d’un plan coordonné de lutte contre la résistance aux antimicrobiens au Québec. Cette initiative a rassemblé des gouvernements, des universités, des laboratoires, des collèges, des associations professionnelles et des groupes de producteurs. Il a également négocié un accord officiel avec l’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) concernant les mesures d’urgence en matière de santé des animaux propres au Québec et a joué un rôle essentiel dans l’avancement du concept « Une seule santé » au moyen de la « Stratégie québécoise de santé et de bien-être des animaux : Pour Une santé bien pensée! ». Le travail du Dr Major a été déterminant pour favoriser une approche collaborative de la santé et du bien-être des animaux dans la province. Moment mémorable de la carrière du Dr Major : son admiration pour les présentations de Brian Evans. Il se souvient de la conférence annuelle sur la santé animale qui s’est tenue à Ottawa au début des années 2000, au cours de laquelle M. Evans, connu pour son éloquence et sa précision, a été confronté à un défi inattendu. Dans le cadre d’une présentation des résultats de la dernière réunion annuelle de l’OMSA, les diapositives de Brian Evans ont été mélangées par inadvertance avec des photos touristiques de Paris, ce qui a entraîné une pause humoristique et imprévue dans son discours. Le Dr Major se souvient avec émotion de cet incident comme d’un moment fort et divertissant, qui témoigne de la capacité d’Evans à captiver un public, même dans des circonstances inattendues. Elle a obtenu un diplôme de médecine vétérinaire à l’Université de Montréal en 1984 et une maîtrise en sciences cliniques vétérinaires (Université de Montréal, 1987) et en économie rurale (Université Laval, 1995). Au cours de ses 30 ans de carrière au gouvernement du Québec, elle a élaboré et mis en œuvre la Stratégie québécoise de santé et de bien-être des animaux, qu’elle a présidée de 2018 à 2021. Elle a également participé à la création d’ANIMA-Québec. Avant sa carrière dans le gouvernement, elle a enseigné à l’Institut de technologie agricole et agroalimentaire (1996-2002), a travaillé à l’inspection des abattoirs (1994-1996) et a offert des services consultatifs en matière de santé porcine (1991-1994). Elle continue à travailler comme consultante vétérinaire à temps partiel. La Dre Althouse a obtenu son doctorat en médecine vétérinaire au Western College of Veterinary Medicine en 1982. Sa carrière comprend diverses expériences en Saskatchewan, notamment une pratique rurale mixte axée sur la santé des porcs et des troupeaux laitiers, une activité d’éleveur de porcs et la participation à des conseils provinciaux de recherche agricole. Elle a également travaillé comme vétérinaire de l’ACIA pour l’abattage des volailles et comme spécialiste de la lutte contre les maladies domestiques. Cette formation lui a permis d’acquérir une vaste expérience de la pratique vétérinaire. En tant que VEC, la principale réalisation de la Dre Althouse a été l’élaboration d’un cadre pour les futures initiatives en matière de santé animale, tant au niveau de la Saskatchewan qu’au niveau national. Son équipe s’est concentrée sur la modernisation du cadre réglementaire provincial afin de prévenir les maladies et d’y répondre, d’améliorer le bien-être des animaux et d’étendre les programmes de surveillance de la santé des animaux. Ils ont établi des listes de maladies réglementées et des programmes d’intervention en consultation avec l’industrie et ont créé des groupes de travail sur les thèmes Une seule santé, Un seul bien-être et Maladie débilitante chronique. Au niveau régional, le Dre Althouse a présidé le groupe de destruction et d’élimination de la peste porcine africaine (PPA) et a joué un rôle clé dans la formation du Western Canadian Animal Health Network (WeCAHN). Au niveau national, elle a contribué à l’élaboration de lignes directrices pour la lutte contre la rage, aux stratégies de lutte contre la maladie débilitante chronique, à la mise en place du Système canadien de surveillance de la santé animale (SCSSA) et à la création du Conseil de la santé animale (CSA). Elle a également participé à l’élaboration de diverses prises de position du CMVC et a travaillé avec les sous-ministres adjoints chargés de la réglementation pour faire avancer les priorités du CMVC, dont elle a été la présidente en 2014. Les travaux de la Dre Althouse continuent d’influencer les stratégies nationales en matière de santé animale, notamment la lutte contre la maladie débilitante chronique, la planification de la PPA et la programmation de la surveillance du PCAD. Il est trésorier et membre d’office du comité exécutif et du conseil de l’Association canadienne des médecins vétérinaires (ACMV). Il est également membre du conseil consultatif de l’Institut McEachran, le premier groupe de réflexion canadien dédié à l’intégration de la santé des communautés, des animaux et de la nature. Le Dr Evans a obtenu son baccalauréat en sciences agricoles avec une spécialisation en génétique et en nutrition à l’Université de Guelph en 1974 et son doctorat en médecine vétérinaire dans le même établissement en 1978. Il a reçu les diplômes de droit et de lettres de l’Université de Guelph en 2013 et de l’Université de Calgary en 2014. Il a occupé le poste de vétérinaire en chef du Canada pendant 15 ans, de 1998 à 2013, ce qui fait de lui la deuxième personne à avoir occupé ce poste le plus longtemps. Il a notamment contribué à l’encadrement de futurs dirigeants, à la mise en place d’un programme de stages pour les étudiants en médecine vétérinaire, au déploiement international de vétérinaires en réponse à des flambées épidémiques et à l’amélioration de la collaboration entre le Conseil des Médecins Vétérinaires en Chef et le Conseil des médecins hygiénistes en chef. Son travail a permis d’accroître la reconnaissance internationale des services vétérinaires et des programmes de santé des animaux du Canada. Le Dr Evans s’est engagé à lutter contre la désinformation et à renforcer la confiance du public dans la science. Il espère que les VEC actuels mobiliseront efficacement les professionnels de la santé publique et de l’écosanté pour faire progresser les initiatives « Une seule santé », en s’attaquant aux menaces à l’intersection de la santé des animaux, de la santé publique et de la santé des écosystèmes. En juin 2024, le Dr Evans a été nommé membre de l’Ordre du Canada. Il explique que si cette reconnaissance est une grande leçon d’humilité, la véritable récompense vient des personnes qu’il a rencontrées, des lieux qu’il a visités ainsi que de l’apprentissage et de la croissance continus dont il a fait l’expérience tout au long de sa carrière.
