Recognizing One Health Day - November 3

On One Health Day, the Council of Chief Veterinary Officers (CCVO) joins partners across Canada and around the world in recognizing the vital connections between the health of people, animals, and the environment. As veterinary leaders representing federal, provincial, and territorial governments, the CCVO is committed to advancing an integrated One Health approach that serves the public good through scientific assessment, collaboration, information sharing, and consensus building.

The health challenges we face today rarely exist in isolation. Diseases such as rabies remind us that human, animal, and environmental health are deeply interconnected. Protecting wildlife, vaccinating domestic animals, and maintaining strong public health partnerships all contribute to reducing risks to people and communities. Likewise, promoting animal health and welfare supports sustainable food systems, strengthens rural economies, and contributes to the well-being of Canadians.

A One Health approach also helps address complex issues such as emerging and infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, wildlife health, and environmental change. By working across jurisdictions and disciplines, we can develop more effective solutions that protect animals, safeguard public health, and support resilient ecosystems.

The CCVO's vision is to provide trusted leadership in animal health and welfare for Canadians, and One Health remains central to achieving that goal. Today, we celebrate the many veterinarians, public health professionals, environmental and wildlife experts, researchers, Indigenous partners, producers, and community leaders whose collaboration helps protect the health and wellbeing of all Canadians.

On One Health Day, the CCVO recognizes that healthy animals, healthy people, and a healthy environment are inseparable and that working together is essential for a healthier future.
